The Star Tribune reports the woman shot and killed by an ICE agent today in Minneapolis was Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of three. Good had recently moved to the city and lived with her partner and six-year-old son a few blocks from where she died.
Good’s mother told the Star Tribune her daughter was “an amazing human being” who “was probably terrified”:
Donna Ganger told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter lived in the Twin Cities with her partner. Ganger said the family was notified of the death late Wednesday morning.
“That’s so stupid” that she was killed, Ganger said, after learning some of the circumstances from a reporter. “She was probably terrified.” Ganger said her daughter is “not part of anything like that at all,” referring to protesters challenging ICE agents.
“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” she said. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”
An Instagram account that appears to be Good’s describes her as a “poet and writer and wife and mom and shitty guitar strummer from Colorado; experiencing Minneapolis, MN.”
The Associated Press spoke with Good’s ex-husband:
Her ex-husband, who asked not to be named out of concern for the safety of their children, said Macklin Good had just dropped off her 6-year-old son at school Wednesday and was driving home with her current partner when they encountered a group of ICE agents on a snowy street in Minneapolis, where they had moved last year from Kansas City, Missouri. …
Her ex-husband said she was no activist and that he had never known her to participate in a protest of any kind. He described her as a devoted Christian who took part in youth mission trips to Northern Ireland when she was younger. She loved to sing, participating in a chorus in high school and studying vocal performance in college.
She studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia and won a prize in 2020 for one of her works, according to a post on the school’s English department Facebook page. She also hosted a podcast with her second husband, who died in 2023.
Macklin Good had a daughter and her son from her first marriage, who are now ages 15 and 12. Her 6-year-old son was from her second marriage. Her ex-husband said she had primarily been a stay-at-home mom in recent years but had previously worked as a dental assistant and at a credit union.
It appears Good’s current partner was standing just outside the car when the shooting occurred. In one video filmed in the immediate aftermath, a distraught woman sitting on the ground near the crashed car tells the man recording the video that Good is her wife. He asks if she was riding in the car with her and she responds: “That’s my wife,” and then it sounds like she adds, “We got out to video tape and then they shot her in the fucking head.”
“I have a 6-year-old at school,” she says. “I can’t even breathe right now.”
